- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup warm milk
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 tbsp melted butter (for brushing)
- 1 tbsp chopped parsley (optional)

- Activate yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add melted butter, egg, and salt. Mix until combined.
- Gradually add flour and stir until a soft dough forms.
- Knead for 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Fold in 1 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese.
- First rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down dough and shape into a loaf or large roll.
- Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet or loaf pan.
- Sprinkle remaining cheddar cheese over the top.
- Second rise: Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Bake: Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
- Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with parsley if desired.
- Cool slightly before slicing and serving.
Notes
For extra flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder or a pinch of cayenne pepper to the dough. This cheddar roll is delicious served warm with butter or alongside hearty soups.
