  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 tbsp melted butter (for brushing)
  • 1 tbsp chopped parsley (optional)

  1. Activate yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add melted butter, egg, and salt. Mix until combined.
  3. Gradually add flour and stir until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead for 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Fold in 1 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese.
  6. First rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down dough and shape into a loaf or large roll.
  8. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet or loaf pan.
  9. Sprinkle remaining cheddar cheese over the top.
  10. Second rise: Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  11. Bake: Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
  12. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with parsley if desired.
  13. Cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder or a pinch of cayenne pepper to the dough. This cheddar roll is delicious served warm with butter or alongside hearty soups.
