Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Eggnog Buttercream Frosting: 1 cup unsalted butter, 3–4 cups powdered sugar, 1/4 cup eggnog, 1 tsp vanilla extract, pinch of nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger.
  3. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla.
  4. Alternately add dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  5. Divide batter evenly between pans and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely on a wire rack.
  6. For frosting: Beat butter until creamy, gradually add powdered sugar, then mix in eggnog, vanilla, and nutmeg until smooth.
  7. Frost the cooled cake layers and decorate with festive sprinkles or nutmeg dust.

Notes

πŸ’‘ Tip: Chill your frosting slightly before spreading for easier handling. Garnish with crushed cinnamon sticks or cranberries for extra holiday charm.
