  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil or butter
  • For the gravy:
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Optional: chopped parsley for garnish

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until combined.
  2. Form mixture into 4 evenly sized patties.
  3. Heat vegetable oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  4. Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove patties and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, melt butter for the gravy. Whisk in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes.
  6. Gradually whisk in beef broth, cooking until gravy thickens, about 3–5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. Return hamburger steaks to the skillet and spoon gravy over them. Simmer 2–3 minutes until heated through.
  8. Serve hot, optionally garnished with chopped parsley, alongside mashed potatoes or vegetables.

Notes

Do not overmix the beef to keep the patties tender. You can also add mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor.
