Ingredients
Scale
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk (or as needed)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- In a medium-sized saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat.
- Once the butter is fully melted and begins to bubble, add the all-purpose flour.
- Stir the flour into the butter continuously to create a smooth paste, known as a roux. Cook the roux for about 2-3 minutes, or until it turns a light, golden color. Be careful not to let it brown too much.
- Gradually add the whole milk to the roux while stirring constantly. Start with a small amount of milk and whisk it into the roux until smooth before adding more. This prevents lumps from forming.
- Continue to cook and stir the mixture over medium heat until it thickens to your desired consistency. This may take 5-7 minutes. If the gravy gets too thick, you can thin it out by adding more milk.
- Season the white gravy with salt and pepper to taste. Be sure to taste and adjust the seasoning as needed.
- Once the gravy reaches the desired thickness and is seasoned to your liking, remove it from the heat.
