Description
A cozy twist on traditional sangria, this warm mulled version combines red wine, citrus, spices, and a touch of brandy for the perfect winter drink. Ideal for holidays or chilly nights.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 bottle red wine (750 ml)
- 1/2 cup brandy
- 1/4 cup orange liqueur (optional)
- 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup (to taste)
- 1 orange, thinly sliced
- 1 apple, thinly sliced
- 1 lemon, thinly sliced
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 4 whole cloves
- 2 star anise pods
- 1-inch piece fresh ginger, sliced
- 1–2 cups apple cider (optional for sweetness)
Instructions
- In a large saucepan or pot, combine red wine, brandy, orange liqueur, and sweetener.
- Add orange, apple, lemon slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and ginger.
- Pour in apple cider if desired for a fruitier flavor.
- Warm gently over low heat for 20–30 minutes, making sure not to let the mixture boil.
- Once flavors have infused, ladle into mugs or heatproof glasses.
- Serve warm, garnished with fruit slices or a cinnamon stick.
Notes
Keep heat low to prevent boiling, which can burn off the alcohol. For a non-alcoholic version, replace wine and brandy with grape juice and extra apple cider.
