    • 1 and 1/2 cups peeled & chopped apples (about 2 medium apples)
    • 1/3 cup packed light or dark brown sugar
    • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • Batter:
    • 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
    • 1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce, at room temperature
    • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
    • 1/2 cup whole milk, at room temperature

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  2. Mix the apples with brown sugar and cinnamon and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients.
  4. In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Add eggs, applesauce, and vanilla and mix well.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with milk.
  6. Pour half the batter into the pan, add a layer of the apple mixture, and then top with the remaining batter.
  7. Swirl the batter with a knife to create a marbled effect.
  8. Bake for 60-75 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Allow to cool before slicing.
