These classic Sugar Cookies are soft, buttery, and easy to make. Perfect for cut-out shapes, holiday decorating, or enjoying plain, they bake up tender and delicious every time.

- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using). Mix until smooth.
- Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Divide the dough into 2 discs, wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness on a floured surface.
- Cut out shapes with cookie cutters and transfer to baking sheets.
- Bake 8–10 minutes, or until the edges are just lightly golden.
- Cool completely before decorating or frosting.
Notes
For softer cookies, remove them from the oven just before the edges start to brown. Chill the dough to help the cookies keep their shape. Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 2 months.
