- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 3 large eggs, room temperature
- 1 cup hot water or coffee
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- Black gel food coloring (optional for deeper black)
- 16 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Halloween sprinkles, candy eyes, or spiderweb piping for decoration
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk flour, black cocoa, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, mix buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.
- Slowly add wet ingredients into dry, mixing until combined. Stir in hot water or coffee. Add black food coloring if desired.
- Divide batter evenly into pans and bake 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
- For frosting: beat cream cheese and butter until fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.
- Frost cooled cake layers and decorate with sprinkles, candy eyes, or spiderweb piping for a spooky Halloween touch.
Notes
For an extra spooky look, frost with black-tinted frosting or add white spiderweb piping over a black background.
