  • 1/2 cup black cocoa powder (or dark cocoa)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup hot water or coffee
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Black gel food coloring (optional for deeper black)
  • 16 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Halloween sprinkles, candy eyes, or spiderweb piping for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk flour, black cocoa, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Slowly add wet ingredients into dry, mixing until combined. Stir in hot water or coffee. Add black food coloring if desired.
  5. Divide batter evenly into pans and bake 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  6. For frosting: beat cream cheese and butter until fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.
  7. Frost cooled cake layers and decorate with sprinkles, candy eyes, or spiderweb piping for a spooky Halloween touch.

Notes

For an extra spooky look, frost with black-tinted frosting or add white spiderweb piping over a black background.
