  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 34 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ginger, grated
  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 23 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • Cooked rice or noodles, for serving

  1. Coat the sliced flank steak in cornstarch, shaking off excess.
  2. In a skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat and sear the beef for 1-2 minutes per side until lightly browned. Transfer to the slow cooker.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes. Pour over the beef in the slow cooker.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or on high for 2-3 hours until beef is tender.
  5. If the sauce is too thin, remove beef and thicken sauce in a saucepan with a cornstarch slurry (1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water) over medium heat, then return beef to sauce.
  6. Garnish with sliced green onions and serve over rice or noodles.

Notes

For extra flavor, sear the beef in batches to avoid overcrowding. You can adjust sugar to taste for a sweeter or less sweet sauce.
