- 6 cups thinly sliced apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or mixed)
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp cold butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp coarse sugar (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Step 1 – Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Step 2 – Prepare the Filling: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples with sugars, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Toss until evenly coated.
- Step 3 – Assemble the Pie: Roll out one pie crust and place it into a 9-inch pie dish. Spoon the apple mixture into the crust, dot with small butter pieces.
- Step 4 – Add the Top Crust: Roll out the second crust and lay it over the filling. Trim excess, seal the edges, and cut a few slits for steam to escape. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
- Step 5 – Bake: Bake for 45–50 minutes, until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling. Cover edges with foil if they brown too quickly.
- Step 6 – Cool and Serve: Allow to cool at least 2 hours before slicing to let the filling set. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
