- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, combine buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.
- Gradually add wet ingredients to dry ingredients, mixing until smooth.
- Stir in hot water or coffee until batter is well combined. Batter will be thin.
- Divide batter evenly between prepared pans.
- Bake 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.
Notes
For extra richness, frost with chocolate ganache or buttercream. Using hot coffee enhances the chocolate flavor without adding coffee taste.
