  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 45 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced thin
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook beef: Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook ground beef with onion until browned. Add garlic and cook 1 minute. Drain excess fat. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  3. Make sauce: In a bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth.
  4. Assemble casserole: Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the dish. Top with half of the beef mixture, half of the sauce, and a sprinkle of cheese. Repeat layers with remaining ingredients.
  5. Bake: Cover with foil and bake 50 minutes. Remove foil, bake an additional 10–15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly and potatoes are tender.
  6. Serve: Let rest 5 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

For added flavor, mix in sliced bell peppers or mushrooms. This casserole freezes well before baking.
