Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 chocolate cake (store-bought or homemade), cut into cubes
  • 2 cups cherry pie filling or jarred cherries in syrup
  • 2 cups cold heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 (3.4 oz) box instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 cups cold milk

  • Optional: Kirsch (cherry liqueur) for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the chocolate pudding by whisking the pudding mix with cold milk. Refrigerate until thickened.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form.
  3. Cut the cooled chocolate cake into bite-sized cubes.
  4. Begin assembling: Place a layer of chocolate cake cubes at the bottom of a trifle dish.
  5. Drizzle lightly with Kirsch if using, then spoon a layer of cherries over the cake.
  6. Add a layer of chocolate pudding, followed by a layer of whipped cream.
  7. Repeat the layers until the dish is full, ending with whipped cream.
  8. Top with chocolate shavings or curls for a festive finish.
  9. Refrigerate at least 2 hours before serving to allow flavors to meld.

Notes

This trifle can be made 24 hours ahead, making it perfect for Christmas gatherings. For a kid-friendly version, skip the Kirsch. Add extra chocolate curls or maraschino cherries on top for decoration!
