  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 cup peeled and diced apples (about 1 medium apple)
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar or glaze for topping

  1. In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. In another bowl, whisk buttermilk, egg, and melted butter.
  3. Fold wet ingredients into dry until just combined, then gently fold in diced apples.
  4. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Drop spoonfuls of batter into hot oil, frying in batches for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  6. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  7. Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle glaze while warm and serve immediately.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a pinch of cardamom or drizzle with caramel sauce. Make mini fritters for easy party bites.
