- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 cups peeled and chopped apples (about 2 medium apples)
- Optional: 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
Instructions
- Preheat oven: Preheat to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch sheet pan.
- Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
- Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, beat butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla extract.
- Combine wet and dry: Alternately add dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Add apples and nuts: Fold in chopped apples and nuts if using.
- Bake: Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
- Cool and serve: Allow to cool completely before cutting into squares. Serve plain or with a dusting of powdered sugar.
Notes
Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a nice balance of sweetness and tang. For extra flavor, sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top before baking.
