  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • Coarse sugar for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together.
  2. Divide dough in half, shape into disks, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  3. Preheat oven to 400Β°F (200Β°C). In a bowl, toss sliced apples with both sugars, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice.
  4. Roll out one dough disk and place it in a 9-inch pie dish. Add the apple filling evenly.
  5. Roll out the second dough disk and place it over the filling. Trim and crimp the edges, then cut small slits for steam to escape.
  6. Brush the top with beaten egg and milk, and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
  7. Bake for 45–50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. Cool for at least 2 hours before serving.
